Every year billions of animals are used in laboratory-based research. The welfare implications are obvious – many are subjected to stressful conditions and invasive procedures that cause prolonged suffering. However, all around the world progress is being made in advancing the three R’s: Reduction, Refinement and Replacement. This topic is not only relevant to commercial companies invested in medical research. Universities and other organisations conducting a wide variety of experimental research also use animal subjects, and as wild capture of animal subjects remains an issue, the animal experimentation is of particular interest to environmentalists, government border agencies and trade organisations.
